This is a 4-credit course, Gender and Transnational Politics: A Comparison of Northern Ireland and the Southern United States AMST/POLI 294, offered in the spring 2026 semester and taught by Professor Duchess Harris and Professor Julie Dolan. The course examines the intersections between the US Civil Rights Movement and the Troubles in Northern Ireland, exploring themes of power, marginalization, and the fight for justice.
The spring course is followed by a required 10-day travel component to Ireland and Northern Ireland in May. This study away portion of the course will give students a much deeper and nuanced understanding of the history and politics of place, the challenges inherent in moving from a divided to a more unified society, and an opportunity to learn from people on the ground who are committed to building peace.
